The Beauty of Marble Mosaic Art

Marble Mosaics

how to make a mosaic stepping stones

There are certain parameters to adjudicate the quality and worth of a thing. For instance a good human being should be a moral and an ethical individual, a good book must be informative, comprehensible and written with a profound thought etc. Similarly the merit of any building, house or workplace is assessed by its aesthetic value and quality of material used in making it.

Besides applying vibrant paints in different color combinations, marble floorings and tiles etc. now something more and exclusive can be done to enhance the aesthetic significance of an edifice. This is the installation of Mosaic Art. Mosaic art involves intermixing differently colored pieces of stones, glass etc. to form various pictures and patterns.

Mosaic is quite an ancient art. It started about 4000 years ago. During 4th and 3rd century BC, Mesopotamians had developed mosaic with thin cones of baked clay that were painted differently at the ends. Similarly Greeks decorated their floors with the help of pebble made mosaics and Macedonians used polychrome pebble mosaics to embellish their structures. But the variation was not confined to mosaic ingredients only for the images so created also differed with different civilizations. For instance early Christian mosaics of 4th and 6th century BC mainly represented hunting scenes, birds and animals. While 7th century Islamic mosaics were mostly floral pictures and scenes. However with the passage of time mosaic art has encountered many changes and has greatly been refined, though the technique is still the same.

Phoenician Arts, a third generation company with a distinguished name in mosaic art industry, has given a new dimension to this art. Phoenician Arts has gifted the world absolutely novel hand-made marble mosaic designs carved out of natural marble and semi-precious stones. It has also revived and reproduced the traditional elite mosaics of the Greeks, Romans and Byzantinians. The mosaics by Phoenician Arts are wonderful paradigms of the primitive and contemporary existence. This is the reason that the mosaic work has successfully replaced the other art forms that exist today. At present mosaics are the most prized and coveted means to augment the aesthetic value of a place or structure.

i buy mosaic
Since Phoenician Arts develops mosaics for various themes such as medallions, animals, figures & scenes, kitchen related, religious, geometric etc., these are largely and conveniently used to adorn indoors as well as outdoors. Within a house or workplace mosaics can be installed in hallways, dining areas, floor center of living rooms, above the fire place, in an archway and the like. Whereas in case of outdoors mosaics can beautify tabletops, pools, garden areas, entrance of buildings and houses.

The popularity of the Phoenician mosaics is at a surge not only because of their mesmerizing appearance but also due to the advantages they have over other means to decorate houses and places. For instance in comparison to paintings and photographs, these mosaics are more appealing and authentic. Phoenician mosaics are heat and water resistant and so can be installed at places like bathtubs, pools, outer surface and floors of a building. Also these mosaics are easy to clean with least chances of wear and tear. Moreover Phoenician Arts offers the opportunity to customize the mosaics according to the need (budget, ambience of the house, colors, sizes, etc.) of the customer.

Glass Mosaic Tile Art: Easily Fix Grout-line Imperfections

Have you ever watched your mosaic grout seemingly shrink before your eyes as it hardens? Arrrrg! The grout lines are no longer flush with the tesserae and tiny pinholes mysteriously appear. Now what?

As the grout sets and hardens, you may notice grout shrinkage (i.e., the grout lines are like little valleys where the grout sinks and isn’t flush with the tesserae). This used to happen to me a lot when I mixed the grout too runny. However, since using thick, pasty grout, I’ve experienced much less grout shrinkage. Don’t fret! It’s an easy fix. Simply re grout the mosaic. It’s a lot easier the second time, especially when using thick, pasty grout.

If you’re not crazy about the idea of going through the whole grouting process again, here’s a little trick I use at the end of my normal grouting process. After the last wiping cycle when the grout has set for about 45 minutes, go back and carefully inspect the entire mosaic for tiny pinholes, missed areas, depressed grout lines (i.e., where the grout is no longer flush with the tesserae), and other grout imperfections.

CAUTION: Cement (i.e., grout) is mildly caustic so don’t do this process with your bare hand. Wear a glove for protection.

Use the leftover grout if it’s still workable. If it’s not, then mix another small batch (two tablespoons of grout powder are usually enough). Add just a bit of water at a time so you don’t end up with grout soup (i.e., the grout should be thick and pasty, not runny). Wearing a glove, use your index finger to scoop up a dab of grout and rub it into the imperfect area. Fill the little pinholes that invariably occur, and the little gaps that you missed, and the little depressions that seem to form as the grout sets. Simply fill in those imperfections with your finger, wipe off the excess grout from your finger, and then use your clean finger or a dry paper towel to carefully wipe up the excess grout without disturbing the grout line. Voila! The imperfections are fixed. Don’t accept those imperfections! Go back and fill them in.

Do not use your bare hand to do this. After a while, the skin will wear away and you’ll bleed all over your beautiful mosaic. Yes, you will, indeed, bleed if you spread and wipe grout long enough with your bare finger. It happened to me! I could see the skin wearing away on the tip of my finger, but I was stubborn, thinking I’d be done soon. A few wipes later, the last layer of skin was gone and it bled. Now, I always wear a rubber glove to protect my skin. I don’t use latex medical gloves because they’re relatively expensive (about $100 for a box of 50). Instead, I use vinyl synthetic, powder-free exam gloves. I can get a box of 100 at Walmart for about $30. I only need one glove at a time because I only use my right hand when spreading and wiping the grout (i.e., I don’t need to glove my left hand). That equates to about $0.30 per mosaic, which is well worth it to avoid the pain of wearing your skin down until it bleeds!

Here’s a tip if you only do a few mosaics a year. When you go to the doctor for your routine visits, ask the nurse if you can have a couple of the rubber gloves from the box that’s usually on the counter in the exam room. Be polite and ask (don’t steal!). I prefer to buy the box of 100 because I like having them around for other uses. These gloves come in handy for lots of messy work, such as piling charcoal into a perfect pyramid on the grill or changing the wax ring under the toilet.

Try this trick the next time your grout your mosaic. You’ll be pleased with the results. No more grout-line depressions, no more missed pinholes, no more imperfections!

Mosaic Tile Installation and Use

sell mosaics

Generally, the texture of mosaic tile is very much similar to the texture of ceramic tile.

The different between mosaic tile and ceramics is the size of mosaic are smaller. The size of mosaic tile is generally about 5*5 centimeter. When using mosaic, we will assemble small pieces altogether, stick with paper glue or other materials. When apply mosaics to the surface of the floor or walls, you have to make sure that you leave enough space between single tile to let cement leak into those space and make mosaic stick together.

The raw material that mosaic generally made from are clay, marl, stones powder and some kind of sand mixed together. Then take the mixture of these materials compress with a mold by using extreme high pressure and then burned at the temperature around 800 degree Celsius.

Usage

We use mosaic as covering material of floor and wall or other surface. There are two types of mosaic, divided by the character of the tile’s surface, which are polished surface and rough surface. Polished surface mosaic is suitable for wall covering meanwhile the rough surface suitable for floor covering in order to prevent slip. The surface of mosaic tile also has ability not to damaged from chemicals, oil, pressure and scratch

Caution

You have to make sure when apply mosaic to the surface, piece of mosaic must firmly stick to the surface, otherwise they will peel of the surface. You can use wet cotton to clean the mosaic without using any other cleaning chemicals.

Installation

First of all, the surface the floor/wall should be well prepared in terms of slope and cleanliness of the surface. The surface must be flat and not be knobby otherwise the tile will not stick firmly to the surface. Then mix cement with sand in the right proportion and apply to the surface about 3 centimeter thickness and slowly put mosaic tile on the cement and leave it until the cement dried (generally take at lease 3 hours). In case of using glue paper to stick the mosaic, you should leave it at least about 24 hours before peel of the glue paper, then apply cement into the cavity between single tile and leave it for another 2-3 days before use. This method is not complicated so it is ok for you if you want to make it by yourself.

if you go to a construction materials shop and see mosaic tile that mock by glue paper or nylon net, this is just a mock up model to display the pattern or design of the mosaic only, it’s not the way that you can have those paper tile to actually apply to floor or wall surface.

The mosaic that assembled and stick on net is suitable for floor covering than using with wall, because nylon net has less ability to stick with the surface because the net have to carry weight of entire of mosaic while it has very little space that attached to the surface. The type of mosaic that use glue paper to coat and adjoin to the surface will be more effective in

Mosaic Artworks From Ancient Times

Mosaic art has evolved throughout the centuries since the first time it was first used to decorate walls, ceilings and floors. The mosaic tools have also evolved from the humble pebbles to the more exquisite reflective mosaic tiles. The themes changed throughout the centuries as well. From simple scenes depicting everyday life, to gladiators and warriors, roman gods and festivities to geometric and decorative shapes, we can really say that mosaic has evolved along with us.

mosaic tile ,Macedonia 375 – 300 B.C “The lion hunt ”

Among the many famous mosaic artworks that have been uncovered include those that were found in the Macedonian city of Aegae. The mosaics found there decorated the vast floors of the many Hellenistic villas. In another place, more specifically in North Africa, mosaics were also discovered covering the floors of Roman Villas.

Among the largest collections of mosaic pieces was found in the Villa Romana del Casala which is near Piazza Armerina in Sicily. These collections of beautiful artistic mosaic tiles are protected by the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Oddly enough, these mosaics were actually buried and protected by a landslide which happened in the 12th century. Before its discovery, it had been buried for about 700 years. In this mosaic collection, the most notables ones are the Circus Scene, the Little Hunt, the 64 m long Great Hunting Scene, the Labors of Hercules and the infamous Bikini Girls which features girls in what looks like our modern day bikinis.

During the time of the Renaissance and the Baroque art, mosaics went out of fashion and were replaced by frescoes but that didn’t stop mosaics from appearing in a more opulent form. Mosaic tools of course became a bit more advanced, as were the tiles that were used. This advancement made for brighter more reflective mosaics. The likes of which can be see in the old St. Peter’s Basilica which was beautifully decorated with mosaics that flaunted the richness and artistry of the time. Soon enough, mosaics became common place in churches that were built during the earliest Christian eras and continued on till the 17th century.

The artistic mosaic tiles of this time also proved to be more long lasting than its predecessors. The mosaics that can be found in Sr. Peter’s Basilica were often based on designs or the canvases from Guido Renu, Ciro Ferri, Domenichini, Carlo Maratta among many others. Mosaic artists who contributed to some of the mosaics that can be found in the basilica were Giovanni Battista Calandra, Favio Cristofari and Pietro Paolo Cristofari. The artist Raphael, himself, is represented in the form of a mosaic replica of his last work of art, the Transfiguration.

As you can see, no matter which century the mosaic has always been a prevalent form of art. Though not as popular as its contemporaries, it never fell out of the picture. Even now, people still admire the beauty of a good mosaic art work. The alignment and arrangement of the mosaic tiles to create a picture never failed to impress even the most discerning of viewers. Truly, this art form is a classic and truly exquisite.

Find A Mosaic Table For Your Home

Mosaic Tables Add Style To Any Room

how to make a mosaic table top

Mosaic tables add style and charm to any room. With the color and patterns, you can create an aura of charm and sophistication. Whether indoors or out, mosaic tables add flair and sophistication to the surroundings.

Mosaic tiles are different from most other tiles. These brilliant and diverse tiles are usually used in showers and other floors to add an aura of style and color to areas that are otherwise dull and listless. For the home decorator who wants to customize all the rooms in the house, these tiles come in a variety of textures, colors, shapes, and layouts. In addition to their function as room tiles, as an art form, they are known as mosaic art.

Getting to Know Mosaic Tile

In most cases, mosaic tiles have ridges on the backside in order to make it easier for glue to bond securely. Whether the material is glass, stone, or ceramic, it is still a form of mosaic. This also includes vitreous-glass, which is a glassy material but rather than clear, it is opaque. This is likely to be the type of glass that you will find in mosaic tables, which are often made of stained glass combined with tumbled marble to give it the special hand-painted look that is so popular, especially with outdoor tables.

Mosaic Tables for a Touch of Style

Do something different for your patio and add some flair to it. Ordinary glass tables are fine, but if you want some color, go for . Whether it’s stained glass or mosaic tile cut into pieces and placed intricately to form a pattern, the look is extraordinary.

Mosaic is not limited to the outdoors by any means. Wooden mosaic tables of various sizes and purposes are also available to provide more color to your home. Whether it’s a game table or a casual table, you can be sure that a mosaic table will make a big difference in the way your room looks.

Creating Mosaic Tables

If you have some tables that you want to decorate yourself, be sure that when you cut the tiles, you use a mosaic tile cutter and not just an ordinary tile cutter. Although a regular tile or glasscutter is likely to work, the cut may not be as precise as it will if you use the specially designed cutter. Another thing to remember is that although some people tend to use broken pieces of ceramic plates as mosaic tile, because of their non-breakable qualities; however, this makes their edges razor sharp, so they are not suitable to use as mosaic tile or mosaic pieces.

For wooden tables, you have a little more flexibility in what you create since you are not dealing with a glass top table. You do still need to be careful with the tiles so that you cut and place them properly. When all is finished, expect to find a beautiful and stylish addition to your room.

The Importance of Color in Glass Mosaic Art

Glass Mosaic Tile Art: Color And Contrast

Making wonderful glass mosaic tile art is easy! Let me show you how.

Working with color in mosaics is much more challenging than most other art media, such as paint and colored pencils. The painter’s color palette is limited only by the painter’s imagination in mixing any number of colors until the desired hue is achieved. In contrast, the mosaic artist’s color palette is constrained by the limited colors that glass manufacturers decide to produce, which are typically determined by what sells best.

As an example, let’s compare the mosaic artist’s choices for the color blue to the painter’s choices. One of my favorite online mosaic tile stores offers 14 various colors of blue vitreous glass tiles; whereas, a popular online artist’s paint store offers only 13 colors of blue paint. However, the paint store also offers 91 various shades of reds, yellows, oranges, greens, purples, pinks, browns, grays, whites, and more. The painter can choose to blend any one of the 13 blue colors with any number of the other 91 colors. Unlike a painter, the mosaic artist can’t blend various colors to create a new one. So, while the mosaic artist is limited to only 14 colors of blue, the painter has an almost limitless palette.

glass and marble mosaic tile

If we, as mosaic artists, can’t mix colors to create new ones, are we stuck with what the glass manufacturers give us? Certainly not. This is where the artist’s imagination and creativity are tested. Unlike the painter who mixes colors to create new ones, we blend different colors and shades by placing them next to each other to give the illusion of color change. For example, by alternating small pieces of dark blue and light blue tesserae, the result is that our eyes interpret the pattern as medium blue when viewed from a distance. If we view the pattern from only 12 inches, then our eyes can distinguish the pattern and we see an obvious checkerboard. However, when viewed from 12 feet, we must focus more to distinguish the checkerboard because our eyes interpret the blend as a single color (i.e., we see medium blue instead of a bunch of small pieces of dark blue and light blue).

Color is equally as important to your mosaic’s look as andamento (i.e., the visual movement of your mosaic created by placing tesserae in specific patterns). Artists choose colors to stir emotions or simply because they like how the colors look. The brain is sensitive to certain color schemes, so whatever motivates your color choices, you must ensure the combinations don’t irritate or bore the viewer.

Be aware of how the eyes see varying color characteristics when colors are juxtaposed. Plan your desired look before cutting and gluing any tesserae. Do you want contrast or do you want an intentional blended look where the colors are barely discernable? When you determine the overall look, mood, and feel that you want your mosaic to represent, you’ll know how to achieve it by combining color with andamento.

Experiment with different hues, tones, and intensities to create texture and shading. Browse the Internet for mosaic artists of different styles to see how they use color. Note the feelings that each piece evokes in you, then think about how the artist’s use of color contributes to creating those feelings.

glass marble mosaicThe best way to learn how to use color in mosaics is to start cutting and gluing your own glass. Yes, you’ll probably make a few mistakes along the way, but learn from them and don’t repeat them. Maybe someday, I’ll be in a museum marveling at the incredible use of color in one of your mosaics!

Origin of Mosaic Art

Mosaic Art: History and Present Day

  buy glass mosaic tiles

Mosaic art is an ancient art form, going back over 4000 years. It has experienced many changes, though the technique has remained the same. Today, mosaic art has replaced other types of art for consumers and businesses.

Certain parameters are in existence for the purpose of judging the quality as well as the worth of both animate and inanimate objects. For example, a good person should possess both morality and ethics, and a high-quality book should provide beneficial information, be easy to comprehend and well-written. Likewise, any building, including a house, and workplace is judged based upon its visual appearance as well as the construction material’s quality.

Using Mosaic Art to Decorate

In addition to using brightly colored paints in varied color combination and marble floors and tiles, there is another idea that will great enhance the appearance of any room—installing mosaic art. With mosaic art, you intermix different colors of stone, glass, and other items in order to form pictures or patterns.

History of Mosaic Art

Mosaic has been in existence since ancient times. It began many centuries ago. In the 3rd and 4th century BC, the Mesopotamians developed a type of mosaic art using baked clay formed into thin cones whose ends were painted in different colors. In a similar fashion, Greeks used pebbles made into a mosaic fashion to decorate their floors while Macedonians decorated buildings and other structures with mosaics made of polychrome pebble. More than the ingredients were varied—the images created were even different among the various civilizations. For example, in 300 and 500 BC, Christian mosaic usually depicted scenes of hunting, depictions of birds, and scenes of animals while 7th Islamic mosaics of the 7th century were usually pictures or scenes of flowers. The technique employed to create mosaic artwork has remained the same over the centuries, though the art itself has experienced a number of changes and been greatly refined.

Mosaic Art Industry

Phoenician Arts is a third generation mosaic arts company whose name is well known in the industry. Thanks to the efforts of this company, there is a new depth to this ancient art form. Phoenician Arts produces hand-made mosaic designs that they carve from genuine marble and other varieties of stones in the semi-precious category. They have also managed to revive and reproduce traditional Greek, Roman, and Byzantine elite mosaics. The Phoenician Arts’ mosaics are excellent paradigms of life during primitive as well as contemporary times. It is little wonder that mosaic art has replaced most other forms of art that are in existence today. Currently mosaics are more requested than any other way to augment the visual quality of any place or building.

Phoenician Arts creates mosaic arts for different themes including medallions, pictures of animals, figures and scenes, themes from the kitchen, religious themes, geometric figures, and much more, most of which are used to decorate the indoors and outdoors. In a house and workplace, you can install mosaics in dining areas, living room floor area, above the fireplace, in and archway, and much more. Outdoor mosaics uses include mosaic tables, pools, gardens, and building and home entrances.
